Web Design

Blending design, technology, and psychology for engaging digital experiences

My web design work begins with understanding who the audience is, their goals, and what they need to know to make decisions. I dive into the web content to understand both substance and structure to develop flow and readability. I use wireframing and prototyping to establish hierarchy and visual continuity, working with draft content instead of placeholder text. Content and design work in concert to meet needs and achieve goals; neither should be isolated from the other.

Elements  of my design philosophy in practice:

  • Typography: I believe that text should be enjoyable to read and easily scannable. The hierarchy of headings, body copy, captions, and pull quotes, for example, should follow a pattern to create cohesiveness throughout the site. The font selections should reflect the institution and the audience.
  • White space and color: I enjoy expressing ideas with white space and color. White space supports the visual hierarchy and creates horizontal and vertical flow. Color is added to call attention and create a conceptual grouping of content or support branding.
  • Reusable content and atomic design: My designs are created for flexibility not only for the multitude of devices but also to address various content needs. One of the best things about COPE tools is that content can be efficiently placed in relevant areas. Coupling that with atomic design, I can create and maintain digital design systems that allow for highly organized and consistent websites.
